We tend to believe things like: “I don’t bother anyone and I don’t expect that anyone will bother me. For that reason, I don’t need to take any sort of extreme measures in being prepared to defend myself and my family. And, on the outside chance that someone decides to attack me, then I STILL know how to fight and I can fight them off until the police can reach me.” This all sounds good and most people can take solace in these things being 100% true (maybe with the exception of the fighting piece). This mostly works for most people for the vast majority of their lives. Put in another way, the probability of anything negative happening to you is extremely low. However, the impact, should you become in any sort of violent counter, can be very high. Trauma and PTSD type symptoms are often the residual effects after a violent encounter for people whether man or woman.
